Transparency*Note* I am not a tutorial writer. This is just the way that I do things, if you have a better, easier way, please let me know, and I will add it to this. Thanks. OK, Angel Shaggywolf asked for this tutorial, so I made her a sig tag as the sample. This one is a .jpg, and has been compressed to 50%, so it is on a white background. But, we are going to save hers as a .gif, which will be transparent.
OK, we have our graphic made, and we want to save it, so we go to File, Export, GIF Optimizer.
Then this box will come up.
The image on the left is clear, but the one on the right is mottled and has jaggies. So we click on Use Wizard. Then this box comes up:
Make sure the Use Existing Transparent Areas is checked, then click Next.
Then it asks you to choose your background color. You can right click on the color, and choose whichever color you want. For this example, I chose the color of the font that I used. You have to be careful here because this color is going to show up as a shadow around your entire image. This is one drawback about this Wizard, but I don't know of any way to get rid of it. If you do, please let me know.
Then we get this box that asks you if you want to use Web-safe colors, or to Choose the best colors. I was taught to always click on No, choose the best colors.
With this box, you can adjust your image quality. You can choose to use a smaller number of colors, and have a smaller file size, but your image will not be optimum. If you leave it all the way up, the quality of your image will be better.
Then it shows you a picture of your image that has been compressed and optimized as a .gif. You can click on the pic and drag it around to see the whole thing. If you are satisfied with it, just click Finish. This is the finished graphic:
You can also use this Wizard when you have made an animation. When you click Save As, just click on Use Wizard, and follow the same procedure. 04/17/2006
