Masks
*Note* This page is graphics
heavy, please give it time to load.
A mask is nothing more than a
stencil. The white part is where nothing will show up, and the
black part is what will show after you get thru. Like painting your
name on a mailbox. If you use a stencil, you can paint all over the
stencil, but the only thing that shows up is where the
stencil is cut out. You can make a mask out of any black &
white image as long as the color is set to 16 million colors.
There
are several ways of using a mask. This will be a multi part
tutorial. In this one, we are going to make a mask from a
black and white .jpg.
This is what we are aiming for:

For this tutorial, you will need
Paint Shop Pro, and Fantastic Machines Tile Tool, a demo version is
available here.
Unzip your FM Tile Tools into your Jasc PSP Plug In Folder.
You will also need this picture,
just right click and save to your hard drive.

And this mask image, just right
click and save to your hard drive.

OK, now, open up your PSP, then go
to File, Open, and find your Fairy picture, and your mask image.
You can minimize your mask image if you want. Click on your
Fairy image to make sure it is the active image, then hold down the
shift key, and click on D. This will duplicate your image.
You can then close your original Fairy picture.
Then go to Masks, New, From Image:

Then a box will come up where you can choose your
mask you want to use. Since we are only using one, there will
just be the one listed there, so we highlight the TornEdgedmask.jpg,
make sure Source Luminance is checked, and Invert mask data is
checked, then click OK:

Your mask will automatically size
itself to your picture. Your picture will then look like this:

Then we go back to Masks, and
Delete (this is important), a box will pop up, asking if you want
this mask merged into the current layer? click Yes:
